History
Born in Amangrad to Cedrick and Isabela Hemwick. When Clavis was a young child he was kidnapped by Lusgidall of the Onyx Gaze. He was experimented on, subjected to a partial form of ceremorphosis, as part of a long line of attempts to create powerful sorcerers under Lusgidall’s control. Clavis was rescued by his parents, both members of the 5th Generation of Founders in the Ivory Masquerade, and brought home.
For a time it was unclear what effect the experiments had on him and so the Masquerade intensely interrogated him about the incident. This was deeply traumatic for Clavis and his memories of this time in his life were patchy. There was a push within the upper echelon of the Ivory Masquerade to have him executed for fears that he would turn into a mind flayer or was under control of the Onyx Gaze. The actions of Cedric and Isabela during this time are disputed though it is agreed upon that they eventually disappeared. The ordeal only came to an end due to the return of Oren Smeltback, another member of the 5th Generation and close friend to Clavis’ parents. Oren forbade any actions against the boy and claimed responsibility for the child, whatever he might become.
Clavis moved with Oren to Forgefall. Like all of Oren’s wards he was taught the art of blacksmithing. Clavis never took very strongly to the craft but the concepts, particularly the creation of alloys and the practice of reforging broken pieces, would play a hand in the development of his ideologies later in life.
Oren hoped that there were no lasting affects from the experiments other than the loss of Clavis’ right eye and the intercranial tentacle that rarely appeared in the empty socket. His hopes were dashed when Clavis fell ill early in his adolescence. Clavis underwent a psionic awakening as his aberrant mind sorcerer powers flared to life. Clavis began to hear the thoughts and feel the emotions of the people of Forgefall unable to shut out the maddening voices. Oren tried to teach Clavis to control his powers, but the differences between their magics, divine and arcane, were too pronounced to be of much use.
Far away, Lusgidall felt Clavis’ magical manifestation and began to appear to him in visions. Lusgidall’s influence, though malignant and corrupting, afforded Clavis a greater understanding of his own abilities. Around this time another, more esoteric power, took notice of Clavis as well. Through the unknowingly combined support of Oren, Lusgidall, and the mysterious third Clavis gained control over his gifts.
Clavis eventually followed in the footsteps of his parents, biological and adoptive, and joined the Masquerade. He was eventually named a Founder after singlehandedly infiltrating and dismantling a vile cult in Lunis. Clavis was uncharacteristically tight lipped about his time in Lunis, but after this mission he started wearing his iconic shattered mask.
Years later the 6th Generation of Founders (Oren, Rowena, and Clavis himself) made a fateful trip to Timberfell, investigating rumors of some extraplanar incursion. Unbeknownst to them, these matters they investigated were the related to the machinations of the Onyx Gaze. The events that followed are unclear and still widely debated in circles concerned with such things, but Clavis himself spoke on events that pertained to him personally.
By this time Lusgidall’s influence had all but eroded Clavis’ morals. By his own admission he had plans to betray the Masquerade and Aecury.
